It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the untimely passing of staff member Michael “Mike” Leavell. He was killed in a motorcycle accident Saturday morning. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Michael A. Leavell began his career with the Indiana Department of Correction as a Correctional Officer at the Plainfield Correctional Facility on February 16, 1990. While employed at that facility he was promoted to the position of Correctional Sergeant on April 14, 2002. On April 8, 2007 he was promoted to the position of Correctional Lieutenant and assigned to the Pendleton Correctional Facility.
During his distinguished career Lt. Leavell served in a variety of capacities including Unit Team Lieutenant, Disciplinary Segregation Unit Lieutenant, Perimeter Lieutenant, a member of S.E.R.T., Assistant Shift Supervisor and he also served as a Staff Sergeant and Medic in the Army Reserve. Lt. Leavell’s most recent assignment was Unit Lieutenant in G Cell House. He recently was promoted to the position of Parole Agent for P.D. #3 in Marion County and was scheduled to begin this new phase of his career on September 20th.
He was an important part of the Department and will be truly missed.
