Indiana State Prison still on lock down after hostage situation

A hostage situation has ended at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City after an inmate assaulted a correctional officer and took another correctional employee hostage.

Inmate Scott A. Nicholson assaulted the officer and took the other employee around 9:30 Wednesday morning. The situation was resolved by 11 a.m. when police say he released his hostage and voluntarily turned himself back in. Nicholson had been taking refuge in a housing unit.

Police say the correctional employee was slightly injured, suffering minor cuts. They say the correctional officer was unharmed.

Nicholson was first sentenced to the Indiana Department of Corrections back in 1998 on charges of robbery, criminal confinement, and attempting to deal drugs. On August 27th, 2010 he was convicted of attempted murder and other charges in a serious assault of another correctional officer while he was in the Pendleton Correctional Facility. In addition, Nicholson faces murder charges from Miami County in the 2004 killing of another inmate while he was in the Miami Correctional Facility.

Officials say Nicholson was being kept in a special needs ward prior to the incident, but would not say whether he has a mental illness. Nicholson has since been moved to the Wabash Prison.

The Indiana Department of Corrections say they are working on the new charges that will be filed against Nicholson as a result of this newest incident.

The names of the officer that was attacked and employee that was taken hostage are not being released for safety reasons.

MICHIGAN CITY -- A man convicted a week ago of attempting to murder a state correctional officer took an Indiana State Prison employee hostage Wednesday before releasing him an hour and a half later, according to a prison news release.

The situation started when Scott A. Nicholson, 42, assaulted a correctional officer about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and took another prison employee hostage. He locked himself and the employee in a housing unit in the prison, the release said.

Officials negotiated with him and Nicholson let his hostage go about 11 a.m., when he then turned himself over to authorities.

The prison officer who Nicholson originally assaulted wasn't injured, while the hostage suffered some slight injuries and was treated, the release said.

According to the release, this is not Nicholson's first brush with violence. His conviction on Friday was in relation to an assault on another correctional officer when he was imprisoned at Pendleton Correctional Facility. He is still facing murder charges in connection with the death of a fellow inmate when he was in the Miami Correctional Facility in 2004.

Nicholson was originally sentenced in 1998 on charges of robbery, criminal confinement and attempting to deal in controlled substances. The Indiana Department of Correction website lists his soonest date of release as 2015, although that does not reflect his most recent conviction.

The news release said additional charges in relation to the newest incident are pending.
