Jail overcrowding continues in Vigo Co. More than 300 inmates housed
Amanda Jarrett VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - For more than a month now, numbers have been holding around 300 inmates at the Vigo County Jail. Now, the jail needs to reallocate money to make ends meet.
Sheriff Jon Marvel said he went to the county auditor to ask for money to be moved around in the jail's budget to meet their new needs.
Marvel said he's spent $2,000 more on mattresses just to accommodate the massive amount of inmates. That money had to be taken from the locks and repairs budget and put in a budget for bedding.
Marvel said he doesn't have a choice, as sheriff he's obligated to take care of all the inmates and keep them safe as they serve time.
"You have to take care of the inmates in your charge, otherwise if you don't then they sue you," Marvel said.
With the high population they're also having to replace and wash more uniforms, blankets, all things the inmates need.
As for needing a new jail, Marvel said there's no end in sight to the problem.
