Federal prisoner escapes County jail
A federal prisoner being booked into the Madison County Jail fled the booking room and escaped running down the railroad tracks in downtown Marshall.
Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood said the man, identified as Benjamin Justin Jones, 25, of West Broad Street, Clyde, was being photographed by a jailer when he fled out the back door of the 105-year-old jail.
"He was being processed at the Madison County Jail. We were taking the leg restraints off, and the prisoner was being photographed," Harwood said.
He said Jones bolted out the nearby back door and ran down the railroad towards Hot Springs.
Officials said Jones appeared in federal court Wednesday in Asheville "on a petty offense" and was scheduled to re-appear in court Thursday.
Harwood said Jones is not considered dangerous, and was last seen wearing blue jeans and a black shirt. He escaped wearing a blue jacket, but witnesses told deputies that he got rid of the jacket.
