OCALA -- A second corrections officer at the Federal Correctional Complex in Coleman has been indicted on charges that he conspired to kill an inmate by placing him into a locked cell with a prisoner nicknamed "Animal."
Michael Kennedy of Inverness posted bond of $50,000 to earn his conditional release Monday. A woman who answered the phone this afternoon at Kennedy's home said he would have no comment.
The federal prison is located northwest of Orlando in Sumter County.
A fellow corrections officer, Erin Sharma, a 33-year-old wife and mother, was sentenced last week to life in prison after a federal jury in Orlando found her guility of identical crimes.
Prosecutors alleged she had conspired to violate the civil rights of inmate Richard Delano, who was beaten to death by cellmate John "Animal" McCullah in March 2005.
The federal indictment of Kennedy alleges that he conspired with Sharma to injure Delano by moving him into McCullah's cell at the Coleman complex. The document contends that Sharma and Kennedy "discussed and agreed to retaliate" against Delano, who had assaulted and injured Sharma a week earlier.
Delano was severely beaten March 4, 2005, three days after he was moved into the cell with McCullah, a notoriously violent inmate who had assaulted every cellmate he had. Delano lapsed into a coma and died 13 days later.
Prosecutors said putting Delano into a cell with McCullah was like putting a sheep in a cage with a wolf.
