Juvenile Females Move to New Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility
Indianapolis, Indiana (November 3, 2009) – Juvenile females incarcerated with the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) saw new scenery and surroundings today when they moved into the new Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility in Madison, Indiana.
As the first component to the Facility Forward initiative, female youths relocated to Madison from the Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility. The new facility is separately located on beautiful grounds near the current Madison State Hospital and Madison Correctional Facility.
The juvenile females boarded five buses for the trip and were greeted by their counselors, a pizza party, and gift bags from the Madison community upon their arrival. At the new facility, 117 staff members, some from the former Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility, will oversee the 91 juveniles.
Educational services will resume tomorrow, and regular visitation will begin on Sunday, November 8. Parents and approved visitors will also be able to use online video visitation through a vendor. Additionally, Reign Transportation will provide round-trip transportation for visitors from Indianapolis to Madison for $25. For more information on the transportation, call (317) 336-1600. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to call the facility if they have any questions.
“This is just the first of the moves associated with Facility Forward. The initiative is an ambitious endeavor, but with the support and teamwork of all stakeholders, its implementation will succeed as a piece of the IDOC’s preparation for the future,” commented IDOC Commissioner Edwin G. Buss.
Facility Forward is a comprehensive initiative designed to enhance prison capacity, maximize current state property and assets, decrease spending through cost savings, and increase overall efficiencies, while still providing the utmost safety and security for the State of Indiana. The next step with Facility Forward, anticipated to begin later this month, will be moving adult females from the Indiana Women’s Prison to the grounds of the former Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility. With all of the moves, the IDOC gains almost 2,100 beds, addresses the foreseeable growth in the female offender population, and saves the State of Indiana nearly $200 million.
