Security at prison tightens after attack
MICHIGAN CITY -- Indiana State Prison officials are investigating an attack on a worker by prisoners, according to a spokeswoman.
A staff member was assaulted on Oct. 19 by an unknown number of prisoners, according to Pamela James, a prison spokeswoman.
The prisoners have been moved to another cell block in the prison, James said, but have not been moved to another prison yet, as they are supposed to be.
"This is all because of the internal investigation," she said.
Officials took most of the prison off lock-down Tuesday, the except being the cell house where the attack occurred.
James said no more information was available on what happened during the attack.
The state prison has been the recent site of incidents, with three inmates escaping this summer through a system of underground tunnels that connected to the city sewer system.
The three -- two convicted murderers and a convicted rapist -- were eventually caught and transferred to other prisons. Indiana Department of Correction officials have been looking into how the inmates escaped and are in the process of firing three employees and have suspended another one.
The prison has also locked down the tunnels that the three inmates used to escape.
