INDIANAPOLIS -- Dozens of members of the Marion County Sheriff's Department were searching Monday for more than two-dozen wanted criminals who are also on the sex offender registry, but incorrect addresses were curtailing the effort.
Officers combed apartment buildings, hotels and homes in search of men who last listed those addresses as their home, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.
In every case during the morning search Monday, sex offenders were not residing at the addresses they indicated.
Some had listed the homes of relatives, and others had listed homes that are now vacant.
"A lot of guys that don't want to be found, they'll register a random address," said Marion County sheriff's Sgt. Andy Dalstrom.
People who live near LaSalle and Robson streets, on Indianapolis' east side, told police they had seen one of the men officers were looking for -- Bradley Moore.
"I didn't even know anybody was looking for him," said one person. "He seemed like a nice guy."
James Williams and other residents said they hope police are successful in tracking sex predators.
"As long as they get them, and get them away from my kids, that's all that matters," Williams said. "I don't want them on this street."
The vacant house Moore had listed as his address is less than a block away from a crowded school bus stop.
"That's why we're here every day," said Donna Little, grandparent of a child at the bus stop. "We don't have enough protection, and we're glad to see all of this happen."
Marion County sheriff's Sgt. Andy Dalstrom said that even if they don't find any of the wanted sex offenders, they are pleased with increased awareness.
"If the community is aware of what's going on, if they're checking the sex offender registry Web site and kind of know what's going on in the area and keep their eyes peeled, they can really help us out," Dalstrom said.
The sweep coincided with the start of school.
