CHESTERFIELD: Inmate attack at state youth facility injured guards 14 July 2009 | Uncategorized By Geoffrey Wertime, Staff Writer
CHESTERFIELD — Three state corrections officers were injured, one of them admitted to the hospital, after an attack by an inmate at Alfred C. Wagner Correctional Facility Monday morning, an official confirmed.
A male corrections officer was believed to still be at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in Hamilton Tuesday after an inmate at the correctional facility attacked him and injured a total of three officers, said state Department of Corrections spokesman Matt Schuman.
The two others were treated and released but not admitted to the hospital, Mr. Schuman said, and the first officer’s injury was not life-threatening.
The inmate had yet to be charged Tuesday though he was moved to the New Jersey State Prison, and the unit where the incident took place was locked down at the Ward Avenue facility.
The DOC’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into the incident, Mr. Schuman said, “trying to piece together what happened, see if more than one inmate was involved and figure out exactly what happened.”
The Wagner facility is one of the DOC’s 13 youth correctional facilities, which house inmates between 18 and 29 years of age.
The DOC would not release the names of the DOC officers or the inmate.
