Prison visitor arrested after contraband discovery
MICHIGAN CITY — An Indianapolis woman has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle marijuana and other items to a prisoner at the Indiana State Prison.
Indiana State Prison Superintendent Mark Levenhagen reported Thursday that Elena Munoz-Baldwin, 29, was lodged in the Laporte County Jail following the Wednesday incident. She’s facing a charge of trafficking with an offender.
According to Levenhagen, Munoz-Baldwin had traveled to the prison to visit with Michael Baldwin, an inmate serving a multi-year term on three felony counts.
Levenhagen said that about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, correctional staff working in the prison’s custody hall observed Munoz-Baldwin place two popcorn bags in a trash can by the dispatch window. The prison superintendent said the trash can was checked and only the two popcorn bags were discovered, with one containing two packages wrapped in duct tape.
Inside the packages were two small bags of marijuana, several Class A cigarettes, a large package of tobacco, a cell phone, two SIM cards and a wire for charging the phone. After the packages were found, Munoz-Baldwin was stopped and escorted to the prison’s internal affairs unit, Levenhagen said.
Michael Baldwin was lodged at the prison in November 2008, and has a projected release date of July 7, 2017. Munoz-Baldwin’s relationship with Michael Baldwin wasn’t specified in Levenhagen’s statement.
