NEW CASTLE -- An ex-guard at the New Castle Correctional Facility is accused of providing sex, vodka and jewelry to a bandit linked to a Fort Wayne teenager's slaying.
Jamie A. Shelley, 25, 1283 Elks Road, Richmond, was charged June 16 with sexual misconduct by a service provider with a detainee, a Class C felony carrying a standard four-year prison term, and trafficking with an inmate, a misdemeanor.
An investigation of Shelley's relationship with felon Charles A. Zimmerman, 26, of Fort Wayne, began after Zimmerman was transferred March 19 from New Castle to the Miami Correctional Facility, Bunker Hill. Authorities said after the move, Zimmerman boasted about his purported relationships with two female guards in New Castle.
According to an Indiana State Police report, a prison investigator found 20 letters from Shelley in Zimmerman's cell.
The ISP report reflects that on April 16 -- a day before she resigned from her job as a correctional officer -- Shelley "admitted to writing inmate Zimmerman several times, sending him naked pictures of herself, bringing in vodka for him, accepting money from (Zimmerman's) family, bringing jewelry into the prison to him and also having sex with (Zimmerman)."
The seized letters indicate the relationship between the officer and prisoner "has been going on for two years, which is approximately how long (Shelley) worked at the New Castle Correctional Facility," state police investigators wrote.
Shelley told authorities she and Zimmerman had sex only once, in a bathroom in the prison's mental health ward.
Shelley this week was released from the Henry County jail after posting a $5,750 bond. Her trial is set for Oct. 20 in Henry Superior Court 1.
Zimmerman is serving a 30-year prison term imposed in July 2003 after he pleaded guilty to robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
Authorities said 18-year-old Lucas Garver of Fort Wayne was fatally stabbed while being robbed -- of $1,400 in cash, marijuana, and a handgun -- by Zimmerman and co-defendant Shawn C. Clark, who was convicted of murder.
Zimmerman had an earlier robbery conviction in Missouri.
