Guards wound inmate at federal prison
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Officials at a federal prison in western Indiana say an inmate was wounded when guards opened fire breaking up a fight at the prison's recreation yard. The U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute says two inmates were sent to local hospitals Thursday morning with injuries, and that one of them had a gunshot wound.
U.S. Penitentiary spokeswoman Hattie Sims says the prison has no information it can release on the inmates' conditions. She says the prison is under lockdown. Sims says that after a fight broke out among several inmates, guards fired shot "to prevent the possible loss of life."
