CBP Officers Apprehend 2 Catahoula Escapees Attempting to Re-Enter U.S.
New Orleans – U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Eagle Pass, Texas port of entry apprehended two prison escapees from the Catahoula Correctional Center, who had been at large for eight months after escaping from the facility in October, 2008.
A CBP officer working in the pedestrian primary lane encountered two men, Andrew Paul Knecht, 27, and Joseph Lucas Persilver, 30 both U.S. citizens from Baton Rouge, who had provided different names yet could produce no identification documents. The officer referred the men for a secondary inspection.
During the examination, CBP officers consulted a national law enforcement database and discovered the men’s true identities and also discerned that both men were wanted by Louisiana authorities. Knecht had been serving a 5-year sentence for forgery and simple battery, and Persilver was serving a two year sentence for second degree battery. The pair was subsequently turned over to the Maverick County Sheriff’s office for adjudication of the warrants and face extradition to Louisiana.
“I cannot say enough about the outstanding work done by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in apprehending these two individuals,” said Warden Pat Book of the Catahoula Correctional Center. “As soon as we can complete the extradition process, these men will be back behind bars where they belong, thanks to the thorough and quick investigative efforts by CBP.”
Robert C. Gomez, CBP director of Field Operations for the New Orleans Field Office said, “This apprehension is all in a day’s work for the dedicated men and women at our ports of entry throughout the United States. CBP is ever vigilant in our efforts to keep our country safe.”
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
