Jail guard charged with assaulting inmate
TAMPA, Fla. — Authorities say a Hillsborough County detention deputy has been suspended without pay pending termination for assaulting a juvenile inmate.
The sheriff’s office reports that 29-year-old Joshua Spencer was charged Thursday with misdemeanor battery and official misconduct.
A report says a 16-year-old inmate spit on deputies Wednesday through the food tray slot of his cell. Spencer then opened the cell door, charged the inmate and knocked him to the floor. Spencer then hit the inmate at least three times on the back of the head. Other deputies restrained Spencer and got help for the inmate.
The teen had a cut on the back of his head but did not require hospitalization.
Spencer was being held on $2,500 bail.
