Anthony J. Johnson
An Evansville man released from prison this week found himself back behind bars less than two days later on the same charge.
Anthony J. Johnson, 28, was arrested early this morning after allegedly stealing a car and later leading police on a short foot chase. He was released only Monday from the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, where he served a year-and-a-half sentence for auto theft.
Police were dispatched about 6 a.m. to a 2007 Ford Taurus that had been stolen while it was left running outside a residence in the 800 block of Jackson Avenue. The victim initially pursued the stolen car in another vehicle, but lost it near Walnut Street and Kentucky Avenue.
An Evansville Police Department officer spotted it moments later turning onto Bayard Park and tried to initiate a traffic stop. But the driver - later identified as Johnson - refused to pull over, leading police on a short vehicle chase, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Authorities say Johnson disregarded multiple stop signs and drove at a high rate of speed before slowing down in the 400 block of Adams Avenue and running away on foot.
He was caught a short time later in a yard in the 500 block of Madison Avenue.
In a subsequent interview with a detective, Johnson said he "knew nothing about nothing," according to the affidavit.
The stolen vehicle was turned over to the victim's wife.
In addition to a new charge of auto theft, Johnson is also facing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, driving with reckless speed and driving with a suspended license.
Johnson, who officials say filled out paperwork for his parole Tuesday, is being held in the Vanderburgh County Jail without bond pending an initial court appearance Thursday.
