Through Prison Tails at the Westville Correctional Facility, the handlers are giving the dogs a second chance. Many of the animals are culled from local shelters, selected for their good-natured temperament and need for additional training. A few of the dogs have homes but were sent to Prison Tails for Express Train, a dog obedience boot camp. In the program, the dogs are giving the offenders a second chance. The offenders are selected based on an assortment of criteria, including having a GED or high school diploma, not having been convicted of violent crimes, and good conduct while in prison.
