Corrections officer fired gunshot into car
A man employed as a corrections officer in a youth services program run by the state Department of Juvenile Justice is accused of firing a weapon into a vehicle, police said.
Domingo Antonio Rodriguez, 24, of Seffner is charged with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and other charges related to an incident about 3:13 this morning in the 100 block of South Fremont Avenue in Tampa, police said.
Rodriguez was held on $23,500 bail at the Orient Road Jail today, records show.
He is employed at W.T. Edwards, an alternative school for juvenile offenders at 13706 N. 23rd St., police said.
According to an affidavit, Rodriguez was driving a 2008 Honda Element that became trapped between several people involved in a dispute when the shooting occurred.
His passengers got out of the Honda and began arguing with the people blocking the car. Then a brown Nissan Altima arrived and stopped in front of the Honda, an affidavit states.
According to police, Rodriguez pulled out a .40-caliber handgun, pointed it at the Nissan and fired a single round into the vehicle, striking the right rear window. The bullet became lodged in the driver’s seat, but struck no one, police said.
An officer in the area heard the gunshot and arrested Rodriguez with the help of identifying witnesses, the affidavit states.
