EXECUTIVE DIRECTIVE: # 09 – 25
This Executive Directive presents a revision to the administrative procedures for Policy 04-03-109, “Grooming Standards for Department of Correction Staff.” The changes presented in this Executive Directive address the facial grooming and jewelry approved for male uniformed staff. This Executive Directive and the changes presented shall be effective April 20, 2009.
Effective April 20, 2009, Procedure IV. A. 1. f, referring to facial hair (beards, goatees, etc.) is rescinded. Uniformed staff shall no longer be authorized to wear any form of facial hair other than moustaches (as indicated in Procedure IV. A. 1. g) and sideburns (as indicated in Procedure IV. A. 1. e).
Additionally, Procedure V. A. 4, referring to earrings, is hereby revised to remove authorization for male uniformed staff to wear any form of earring or other jewelry in or on the ear while on duty or in uniform. Male uniformed staff who are found to be wearing any form of jewelry in or on the ear after April 20, 2009 will be ordered to remove the jewelry.
These changes have been discussed with numerous staff persons throughout the Department and it is the consensus of the majority of staff that these changes will help to standardize the wearing of the Custody uniform and enhance the professional appearance of Department staff. It should also be noted that from the discussions with staff, several other suggestions have been presented and are currently under review. All of the approved changes will be incorporated into the next revision of Policy 04-03-109 and its administrative procedures.
Please ensure that all staff is made aware of this Executive Directive and the changes presented in it. Please ensure that a copy of this Executive Directive is posted in appropriate locations so that staff will have the opportunity to review it.
If there are any questions regarding this Executive Directive, please contact the Executive Director of Adult Facilities, at (317) 232-1309, or the Executive Director of Juvenile Services, at (317) 232-5774.
