A convicted felon from Howard County is on the loose after he escaped Thursday afternoon from the state prison in Michigan City in northern Indiana.
An all-points bulletin was aired over the police radio notifying Indiana State Police, the Kokomo Police Department and the Howard County Sheriff Department to be on the lookout for Steven R. Grove, 26, who may be headed to Kokomo.
Grove escaped from the minimum security unit at the state prison about 4 p.m.
Doug Garrison, public relations of the Indiana Department of Correction in Indianapolis, confirmed the escape and said officers are looking for the convict.
“We believe it’s a walk away from the minimum security unit,” said Garrison.
The minimum security unit is outside the main walls of the Michigan City prison and houses inmates assigned to work crews, Garrison said.
“He was in a work-release program and had access to cleaning buildings.”
Grove was convicted in Howard Circuit Court of attempted aggravated battery, a B felony; resisting law enforcement, a D felony; and criminal recklessness, an A misdemeanor. He was sentenced in 2001 to serve 10 years with three years executed and seven years of probation.
Details of his crimes were not available.
With good behavior, Grove was released on probation in January 2003, but was re-arrested numerous times over the next five years for violating conditions of his probation, according to court records.
In 2008, Groves was sent back to prison after being convicted in Hamilton County of theft, receiving stolen property.
According to Garrison, Grove’s earliest release date would have been Nov. 2 this year.
Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert said Groves has family in Howard County and could be headed this way.
“Anyone who may know the whereabouts of Grove should contact authorities immediately,” Talbert said. “Don’t take the law into your hands.”
