Juvy Center Staffer Sexually Assaulted By Inmate, Police Say
Attack Happened Wednesday, Police Say
INDIANAPOLIS -- A staff member at the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center told police she was attacked and sexually assaulted by a 15-year-old inmate.
The attack allegedly happened Wednesday afternoon while the staff member was on duty at the center, 6News' Derrik Thomas.
"Officers arrived and they were able to talk to the victim. She's doing OK," said Indianapolis police Sgt. Matthew Mount. "She was the victim of a horrendous crime."
Mount said the 15-year-old inmate was transferred to a state Department of Corrections facility. His name was not released.
The Marion County Superior Court, which has oversight over the detention center, released a statement through Judge Tanya Walton Pratt which read, "Marion superior court is concerned about the violence leveled at any member of our community, but is particularly saddened that violence was allegedly leveled at a staff person."
Walton Pratt declined requests for an interview on Thursday.
Parents at the center on Thursday told Thomas they were concerned about security at the facility.
"If the staff is not safe, the children most certainly are not safe, and they can't just walk away," said Donna Bellamy.
"I think there needs to be better controls to keep people safe that are working with kids who have problems. I think it is pitiful," said Katie Colon.
Last month, two staffers were injured in a fight that prompted the facility to be put on lockdown.
