House votes to toughen feticide lawsBill affects a fetus at any developmental stageINDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana House unanimously approved a bill Monday that would lengthen prison terms for those who murder or attempt to murder a pregnant woman and cause the death of her unborn child. Feticide now carries two to eight years in prison. Senate Bill 236 increases the prison time to six to 20 years. It also would allow additional prison time when the mother is the victim. Unlike feticide, this option wouldn't require that the defendant knew the woman was pregnant or intended to harm the unborn child. The bill affects a fetus at any developmental stage. Previously, the fetus had to be at least seven months gestation for murder charges to apply. Because of an amendment modifying terminology to match existing language in Indiana's feticide law, the bill must return to the Senate for consideration. www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/politics/House_votes_to_toughen_feticide_laws_20090406
