Indianapolis - Police arrested a correction officer after he robbed an area gas station.
Police say a female clerk at Rich Oil was smoking a cigarette outside Friday night when 48-year-old Larry Toran approached the store around 10 pm.
"She didn't think it was odd that he was kind of covering his face and his mouth with his hands, because it was kind of cold th at day," said IMPD Sgt. Paul Thompson. "She actually let the individual inside the business and as soon as they entered the business, he announced that it was a hold-up."
According to police, Toran pulled a silver handgun on the clerk and demanded money.
"She complied with his request, provided approximately $81 from the cash register," said Sgt. Thompson.
At the same time, police say the clerk hit the panic button to call police.
"When the officers arrived the suspect was still inside the business. He observed the officers, plus he was slowed down a little bit by the fact that other customers had come in and he didn't want to alert his presence to them and what he was doing," explained Sgt. Thompson.
But when Toran walked outside, the officers took notice.
"His demeanor, his walk, his general appearance brought a great deal of suspicion to the officers at which time they commanded him to stop," said Sgt. Thompson.
According to officials at the Indiana Department of Correction, Toran works as a correction officer at the Indianapolis Juvenile Correctional Facility. Department of Correction officials say Toran was placed on emergency suspension Tuesday when they learned of his arrest.
Police say Toran told them after he was arrested that he'd been out of work and needed the money.
