Correctional Officer Helped Inmate Escape, Officials Say
A correctional officer was arrested Friday after an inmate escaped the New Castle Correctional Facility Thursday night.
Maurice Melton, 38, of Indianapolis was charged with aiding in the escape of an offender.
Jeffrey Kinartail, 28, was discovered missing from a minimum security dorm at midnight.
Kinartail was apprehended early Friday morning at a Motel 6 on Indianapolis' east side.
The Indiana Department of Correction said Melton allowed Kinartail to walk away from the facility by silencing an alarmed door.
Officials said Melton also picked Kinartail up after he got through the door and drove him to Indianapolis.
Investigators think Kinartail promised Melton money if he carried through with the escape plan.
Melton was employed by the Geo Group, a private contractor that operates the New Castle prison. He was suspended without pay and taken to the Henry County Jail.
Kinartail was serving a six-year sentence for a cocaine dealing conviction from Indianapolis. His earliest release date was 2011.
