Corrections officer arrested for child molest
Indianapolis - A Marion County corrections officer who also works in the police reserves is under arrest for allegedly molesting a child.
Marion County Corrections Deputy Richard Alsup is behind bars facing several sex crime charges, including child molestation and sexual misconduct with a minor.
Metro detectives arrested the 39-year-old after a teenage relative claimed two years of abuse.
"He will be removed from his position here with IPMD and my understanding is he is full time at the sheriff's department," said Lt. Jeff Duhamell.
Alsup is in protective custody. His main job is at the Marion County Jail. He is also a reserve police officer for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
The victim told police the sexual abuse happened at several locations including Sheridan, Indiana, several times at a location in the Castleton Area and most recently at Alsup's home at an apartment complex on the Indianapolis far west side.
"It may be embarrassing. But we police our own people and make sure they are on the right track," said Lt. Duhamell.
Deputy Alsup encouraged fellow deputies In this March 20th letter obtained exclusively by Eyewitness News. He writes he wanted to "go over a few things that could save us as deputies and the department some embarrassment."
He goes on to write, "No matter what your job is with this department you are looked up to by every child that sees that badge and gun." He also wrote about "assuring the child...to never be afraid to ask a police officer for help."
Before being brought to Jail 2, detectives say Alsup never admitted to the crime but did tell them something disturbing during their interview.
"He did make some comments that would indicate that he either thought of it or was in his mind that he committed something," said Lt. Duhamell.
Alsup declined our request to talk about the case.
Investigators confiscated Alsup's police gear from both departments. He's still waiting to learn his first court date for hear formal charges. If convicted, he will likely lose both of his positions.
