“We do have a bunch of violent felony offenders,” said Maj. Mark Robinett, head of the warrants unit at the sheriff’s department.
Last week, there were 25,562 criminal warrants active in Marion County, of which 9,100 were felony warrants. About 30 deputies work the streets for the warrants section.
The Web site will help people learn who is most wanted by the sheriff’s department.
“This is a great cooperation between IndyStar.com and law enforcement. We have the ability to post their photos to wider the potential audience, which hopefully will provide the Sheriff's department more tips to help them do their jobs,” said Jon Sweeney, digital news director of The Indianapolis Star.
“IndyStar.com is the virtual street corner of Indianapolis with millions passing by every month. Many of those millions come to us for crime news and if we can attract readers to this new feature we can potentially help in the crime fighting process.”
While the sheriff has turned most street patrols and investigations over to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the sheriff still is responsible for civil and criminal warrants. The sheriff’s department maintains a warrants unit that searches for people wanted for felonies, in cooperation with other police agencies.
That unit searches for those wanted on fresh warrants from criminal charges and for those who skipped court dates, although those mentioned on the Most Wanted page usually will be those charged with crimes.
“We always try to target the offenders who pose the greatest risk to the community,” Robinett said. “That might be repeat offenders, that might be violent offenders.”
People with information on the suspects will be asked to call the sheriff’s warrants unit at (317) 319-5869. This is a separate operation from other programs such as Crime Stoppers of Greater Indianapolis.
Call Star reporter Kevin O’Neal at (317) 444-6304.
