Man faces DUI after hitting jail van By Kevin O'Neal Six jail prisoners and a Marion County sheriff’s deputy were hurt this morning when a jail wagon collided with a SUV on the Northside. Two of the prisoners were seriously injured.
The SUV’s driver has been arrested on preliminary drunk driving charges. The collision was reported to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department just after midnight at Keystone Avenue and 69th Street.
The jail wagon was headed south on Keystone Avenue when the northbound SUV made a left turn and collided with the wagon. The collision forced the jail wagon off the road, where it bounced over the curb and knocked down trees. A police report said the collision was nearly head on.
The SUV driver refused a breath test at the scene, according to a statement from Lt. Jeff Duhamell, an IMPD spokesman. That driver was sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries and to have blood drawn for further tests.
James T. Schlabach, 32, faces preliminary charges of driving while intoxicated and public intoxication.
According to a printed police report, Schlabach told police he had been in Broad Ripple just before the collision, and appeared to be intoxicated. He nearly fell during a field sobriety test when he was asked to walk in a straight line, the report said.
Five of the prisoners in the jail wagon also were sent to Wishard, and the deputy driving the wagon was sent to Methodist Hospital for treatment. None of the injuries were considered to have been life threatening.
