POST-TRIBUNE STAFF REPORT
MICHIGAN CITY -- A female prison officer was arrested Tuesday morning for trying to smuggle a cell phone into the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City for an inmate.
Dawn L. Walker has been accused of misconduct and alleged class C felony trafficking with an offender, Indiana State Prison Superintendent William K. Wilson said.
Fellow prison guards found the contraband wrapped and hidden in what appeared to be oatmeal when Walker went through a routine search at 5:15 a.m. as she reported for duty at the prison.
Officers arrested and held Walker until the Indiana State Police arrived. State Police helped transporting Walker to LaPorte County Jail.
"It is never easy when a fellow law enforcement officer is accused of misconduct, but it is our duty and obligation to protect each other; and the only way to do that is to insist that we all adhere to a code of conduct that will not compromise the integrity of the facility," Wilson said in a statement. "It is our duty to hold ourselves accountable to a professional standard, and it is then that we can truly be proud of the work we do on a daily basis."
Walker has worked at the Indiana State Prison since June 14, 2004, and lives in LaPorte County.
Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Edwin G. Buss said he appreciated staff for the diligent observation that led to the discovery of the contraband.
