Prison guard, girlfriend accused in murder plot
TYLER, Texas — Authorities arrested a Texas Department of Criminal Justice guard and his girlfriend Thursday in an alleged plot to kill the woman’s estranged husband, who thought he and his wife were about to reconcile.
Cathryn Lake, 51, and Rudolph Regalado, 48, were arrested in Tyler on charges of criminal solicitation to commit capital murder. The two were named in indictments unsealed late Thursday that accused them of promising to pay for the murder of Lake’s husband.
They were being held at the Smith County Jail on bonds of $2 million each. It wasn’t immediately clear if they had attorneys.
Federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents took Lake and Regalado into custody. ATF Tyler supervisory agent Clay Alexander said the two had met with an undercover officer assigned to an ATF task force and discussed a price for a hit on Lake’s husband.
“They began asking around and were introduced to a person they believed to be a hit man, who was actually an undercover officer assigned to an ATF task force,” Alexander said. “They met with the ‘hit man’ several times and discussed a price for the act.”
Alexander said he thought a life insurance policy was the motive for the murder plot, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported.
Alexander said he told Lake’s husband of the plot after the arrests Thursday. He said the man was devastated.
“He thought they were getting back together and this just stunned him,” Alexander said.
Regalado is a prison guard at the Hodges Unit in Rusk.
District Attorney Matt Bingham said Regalado provided the undercover agent a gun to use.
