New York Correction Officer Arrested; Agreed to Transport 15 Kilograms of Cocaine
MAR 04– New York Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent in Charge John Gilbride, New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan, New York City Department of Investigation Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn and New York City Commissioner of the Department of Correction Martin F. Horn announced today the arrest of correction officer Edinson Rosales, who was apprehended last night in upper Manhattan. Rosales, who has been assigned to the George Motchan Detention Center on Rikers since becoming a correction officer in June of 2005, was in possession of cocaine he had agreed to transport to Detroit, Michigan for $15,000 (or $1,000 per kilo) at the time of his arrest .
Prior to his arrest, Rosales had agreed to transport 15 kilograms of cocaine at a price of $1,000 per kilo and bring back to the city approximately $400,000 in drug proceeds for a price of $5000.
Edinson Rosales is 29 years old. The defendant has been charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First and Third Degrees and will be arraigned on the arrest later today. If convicted after trial, Rosales faces a sentence of anywhere from 8 to 20 years in state prison.
The arrest was the result of a joint investigation between the New York “Strike Force”, the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, New York City Department of Investigation and New York City Department of Investigation’s Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Correction . The Strike Force is comprised of agents and officers of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York City Police Department, the United States Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the Department of Homeland Security United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New York State Police, the United States Marshals Service and the United States Secret Service. The Strike Force is partially funded by the New York/New Jersey High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), which is a federally funded crime fighting initiative.
All defendants retain the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The defendant will be arraigned at 100 Centre Street, Manhattan, NY later today.
