Child took drugs to jail
A child has been caught being used as a drug courier at Christchurch Men's Prison, prison staff say.
Staff said they were horrified that a boy was found with a package of cannabis oil, pills and methamphetamine as he and his mother visited a prisoner on Saturday.
Prison manager John Roper said staff saw a woman changing the position of the package hidden on the child after they made it through the prison gates.
"Our vigilant staff noticed the woman reach into the child's pants, remove something and hide it in his jersey," he said.
"We detained the woman and the four children with her under the Corrections Act and found a package with what appeared to be cannabis oil, pills and methamphetamine."
Roper said the package allegedly contained a "significant quantity of drugs". He did not know the child's age but he appeared to be under five.
The woman was "given the opportunity to organise childcare for the children before she was taken away by police".
Roper said prisoners were "pretty ingenious" in devising ways to smuggle in contraband.
He had seen drugs smuggled inside children's clothing before, "even down their nappies".
The woman would face a "period of prohibition" from visiting, Roper said.
Many prisoners had drug and alcohol dependencies.
"These prisoners put a lot of pressure on their family and friends to aid them in their attempts to gain this contraband," he said.
