Ohio Sheriff Accused Of Making False Statements Faces Jail Time TOLEDO, Ohio — An Ohio sheriff has been charged with making false statements to FBI agents investigating the beating death of a man at a county jail. Federal prosecutors said Lucas County Sheriff James Telb helped cover up the role that his deputies played in the 2004 death of Carleton Benton. A federal grand jury on Tuesday indicted Telb and three others. The government said a sheriff’s deputy assaulted and strangled Benton in a cell, then left him lying unconscious without seeking medical help. The indictment said Benton was then struck by another deputy. Telb and a lieutenant are accused of concealing their knowledge of the case from federal authorities. Telb, who faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison if convicted, said he never interfered with the investigation. source: www.newsnet5.com/news/19180902/detail.html
