Woman Faces Perjury Charge After Arrest At Home
INDIANAPOLIS -- A Department of Correction employee was arrested at her home on Indianapolis' far northwest side Tuesday on a perjury charge stemming from a case involving her son in 2008.
Police said Antoinette Olive, 42, told officers that her 16-year-old son could not have tried to burglarize a home in the 6700 block of Bridgefield Way in June 2008 because she was with him in northwestern Indiana on the day in question.
A neighbor told police that he saw the teen pull a window screen off a home and lift a window and try to get into the residence.
Officers were able to pull fingerprints from the window that identified the boy, Olive's son.
When questioned in July 2008, Olive told Detective Richard Ray that her son could not have been involved because she was with him in Merrillville.
During her son's trial in October 2008, Olive was in uniform when she testified that she and her son were in Gary when the attempted burglary happened. Cell phone records indicated that she was in Indianapolis.
"That kind of sets the whole system on its ear when you have a public servant such as her lying and testifying under oath to falsehoods," Ray said.
Olive, a corrections officer at the Indiana Juvenile Corrections Facility, was angry with arresting officers Tuesday as she was handcuffed and led to a police car.
"This is so freaking embarrassing, over somebody saying that I'm lying. You're going to get yours," Olive said. "All these homicide and drug cases out here and you can't solve them. You want to arrest somebody for lying."
The Department of Correction issued an emergency and indefinite suspension of Olive, pending the outcome of her trial.
"If a person were to make a material misstatement or perjure themselves while in uniform, that would even be more difficult for state employment," said Doug Garrison, of the DOC.
Her son was found guilty on all charges in his 2008 trial.
