INDIANAPOLIS -- A corrections officer and his fiancée were arrested on Saturday, accused of leaving the woman's 12-year-old son handcuffed for more than six hours. Sydney Eghan, 24, and Betsy Chestnut, 30, were arrested and preliminarily charged with child neglect, said Indianapolis police Sgt. Matthew Mount. Investigators said the couple handcuffed Chestnut's son for more than six hours as a discipline measure, leaving him alone for nearly two hours of that time. "He tried to sleep, he couldn't. He couldn't use the restroom, he wouldn't be able to call for help with the telephone because the fact that his hands were behind his back," said Lt. Jeffrey Duhamell. The boy told police he asked his mother for help when she returned home. At first, he said she told him to lay on his stomach and sleep, but when he started to cry and complain of pain, Chestnut called 911, police said. The couple told police they believed the boy had taken a cell phone. Eghan and Chestnut were arrested that their home. The children were put in the care of child services.
