31 criminals released from Vigo jail Inmates released over 2 days
Kate Greene TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Officials said they had no choice, but to release inmate from the Vigo County Jail because the overpopulation problem could result in inmates suing the county.
Sheriff Jon Marvel said violent offenders will not be released, but then what type of offenders are they releasing?
Here is a breakdown of the ten inmates released Thursday: Three inmates released were for failure to appear. Three inmates were probation violators. Two inmates were for disorderly conduct. One inmate was for theft and one inmate released was for arson.
Officials said 21 more offenders were released Friday. With the millions of dollars cut from the Vigo County budget, Marvel said they can't afford to send the inmates somewhere else.
It costs the county $35 a day to send an inmate to another county jail and $45 a day to send an inmate to any Indiana Department of Correctional Facility. That's not to mention the DOC is facing overcrowding problems, as well.
That just adds to growing numbers in Vigo County because several convicted felons are stuck at the Vigo County Jail, waiting to move into an open bed at a DOC facility.
The Vigo County Jail on Friday said they are now down to 291 inmates on Friday, which is still 30 more than permitted.
