St. Clair Correctional Facility inmate stabbed to death Monday night
Taurus Carroll suspected in inmate stabbing death. An inmate at the St. Clair County Correctional Facility was stabbed to death by another inmate Monday night, a state prison spokesman said.
Michael Darrell Turner, 24, was stabbed multiple times about 7:30 p.m. in one of the general population dorms inside the prison at Springville, said Brian Corbett, public information officer for the Alabama Department of Corrections. Turner was taken to the prison's infirmary where he died, he said.
The suspect, another inmate, used a prison-made weapon, Corbett said.
An inmate, Taurus Carroll, 32, was taken into custody in connection with the stabbing and removed from the general population at the prison, Corbett said. Carroll has been serving a Feb. 13, 1998 life without parole sentence out of Jefferson County for a murder, he said.
Carroll initially was sentenced to death in the 1995 murder of Betty Long in a Kingston laundry. In 2002, the Alabama Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of Carroll, saying that the sentence was excessive.
The Monday stabbing is under investigation by the prison's investigations and intelligence unit, Corbett said. That unit will turn over the results of its investigation to the St. Clair County District Attorneys Office, he said.
Turner was serving time for a Montgomery County conviction on conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery first degree, Corbett said. He had been sentenced on Sept. 12, 2007 on the conspiracy charge, and July 17, 2008 on the robbery charge. He had served 2 years and 27 days of his sentences, which was due to end Aug. 17, 2010.
